Rabun County Schools Nutrition is dedicated to providing wholesome, nutritious meals to the students of Rabun County. We participate in the National School Lunch Program (NSLP). Meals served under the NSLP must meet nutrition guidelines based on the Dietary guidelines for Americans. No more than 30% of calories can come from fat and less than 10% from saturated fat. School lunches provide one-third of the Recommended Dietary Allowances of protein, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, iron, calcium and calories over the course of one week of menus.
Our menus provide a variety of choices that include homemade entrees, fruits and vegetables, whole grains, freshly prepared salads and sandwiches. We will be adding more menu items this year so there will be something for every appetite. Additionally, a new menu committee that consists of students, parents, teachers and school nutrition representatives will be helping in the menu planning process.
Meals are prepared and served by qualified nutrition staff that care about children. Each child nutrition employee is required to take a 30 hour course within the first year of employment. Managers are required to take a school nutrition certification course consisting of 150 hours of class work, be ServSafe certified and complete 30 hours of continuing education every 3 years. In addition to their dedication to providing healthy meals, the child nutrition department at each school prides themselves in food safety and sanitation. This past spring, all four of Rabun County’s School Nutrition Departments passed their sanitation inspection with a score of 100%.
